In the wake of the courtesy visit by members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) Lagos Branch to the palace of the Osolo of Isolo to mark the UN Day of Zero Tolerance to Female General Mutilation, the Federation held a Town Hall meeting on the subject on February 7, 2022.
The meeting, held under the theme, “Accelerating Investment to end Female Genital Mutilation
was an interactive and impactful session, with many members of the Federation present.
Also in attendance were: The Osolo of Isolo, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Alhaji) Kabiru Kolawole Alani Adelaja Agbabiaka and his chiefs-in-council, Iyalojas (Market Leaders) and representatives of different markets in the domain, youths and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), among others.
The paper on the theme was presented by FIDAN Ifeyinwa Okpalaku, as Ruth Akinwande interpreted in Yoruba language to the participants.
In his remarks, the Osolo, who spoke in Yoruba, stressed the harmful effects of FGM, a traditional practice which he described as barbaric, and admonished his subjects to desist from it. He also urged them, as well as FIDA, to speak out wherever it occurs.
The occasion also saw the distribution of fliers disseminating further information on the purpose of the Town Hall meeting on the dangers of FGM.
