The senior security adviser to Governor Bassey Otu, Major General Okoi Obono, rtd, has been dragged to court for allegedly manhandling the managing director of Cross River State Water Board Limited, Dr Godwin Nyiam, two weeks ago in Calabar.
Nyiam is demanding the sum of N500m compensation from Obono for slapping him in the public.
In a swift reaction via text message, the army general denied the allegation, asking “On what grounds will I do that please”?
But in a petition to the Brigade Commander of 13 Amphibious Brigade Headquarters Calabar, lawyer to the complainant, E. E. Osim demanded N500m compensation from the state security adviser, as well as an apology letter to be published in two national dailies for infringement on his fundamental human rights.
The lawyer said his client has become demoralised, become low self esteemed and ashamed as a result of the incident.
The lawyer alleged that the army general had further ordered his operatives to intimidate and harass Nyiam at the Federal Housing Estate in Calabar on May 24, 2025.
The legal practitioner stated that his client decided to drag the security adviser to court to put an end to unruly behaviour by other top security personnel.
“My client is presently suffering severe pains as a result of the beating General Obono’s men meted out to him.
“He was intimidated, harassed and is going through emotional distress because of the way he was publicly humiliated.”
“My client is demoralized, and is feeling ashamed of himself having been publicly manhandled in front of his own staff and onlookers.”
The petition asked the brigade commander to identify the soldiers who manhandled Nyiam on the orders of General Obono.
“We heretofore write to you to use your good offices to fish out those attached to the said General under reference on the aforementioned date to ill treat our client and offer due apology in two national dailies for compensation.” The petition stated.
