A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s broadcast over the naira crisis on Thursday is a contempt of the Court.

He described Buhari’s action as executive rascality and brazen disregard for the rule of law.

In a statement released on Thursday, Adegboruwa disclosed that President could not overrule the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He stated that Buhari should reverse his directive and include N500, and N1000 old notes.

Buhari, in his broadcast on Thursday, directed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to allow only the old N200 notes to co-circulate with the new N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes for 60 days.

But in a swift reaction to Buhari’s directive, Adegboruwa said, “There is the separation of powers in a democracy.

“It amounts to executive rascality, brazen disregard, and contempt of the Supreme Court for the President to separate the denomination of the old notes for legality. It is not open to the President to choose which portion of the order of the Supreme Court will be obeyed.”
