It was yet another feather in the illustrious cap of the former Chairman of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN) as he was unveiled as the Headline Sponsor of 7th edition of the Abuja Lawyers League – an annual football competition among legal practitioners working in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The unveiling, which took place at the Conference Room of the law offices of Mahmud Magaji, SAN & Co. (also known as Rahusa Chambers) in the federal capital, was graced by a number of influential lawyers including the 2nd Vice-President of the NBA; the Chairman of the NBA Abuja Branch, Mazi Afam Okeke; Mr. Yakubu Philemon; Mr. Paul Daudu, Mr. Henry Barnabas; Mr. Caleb Oboagwina; and Dr. Victoria Nlemigbo, among others.
In a statement made available to NEWSWIRE Law and Events Magazine, the organisers of the tournament disclosed that, thanks to the involvement of the learned silk in this regard, the 2023 edition of the tournament is tagged the ‘CHUKWUKA IKWUAZOM (SAN) SUPER CUP 2023.’

The statement added that the Abuja Lawyers League serves as a veritable platform for lawyers to connect and engage beyond the courtroom and away from the rigours of legal work. Its objective, the statement added, is to create an environment where lawyers can kick back and indulge their shared passion for the game of football, while also enhancing their physical and mental well-being.
In his remarks at the occasion, Chukwuka Ikwuazom SAN, who takes over the sponsorship baton from Alhaji Mahmud Magaji, SAN (sponsor of the 6th edition of League) described the competition as a great initiative, given the demanding work schedules, long hours, tight deadlines and high-pressure situations legal practitioners find themselves immersed in, adding that the therapeutic nature of sporting activity, and it’s ability to alleviate stress and promote overall well-being cannot be denied. In addition, Ikwuazom added, participation in sports can also help lawyers develop crucial skills essential for success in the legal field, and helps them build stronger relationships with their colleagues.
Also speaking, the head of the organizing committee of the League, Olujimi Olujide-Poko expressed gratitude at the generous gesture of the learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN, calling it a demonstration of Ikwuazom’s commitment to the betterment of the Nigerian legal ecosystem. The Abuja legal community, he added, was delighted to be associated with Ikwuazom, whom he described as a fine gentleman who has carved a niche for himself in legal practice – and in particular the practice areas of Oil & Gas as well as Taxation. Ikwuazom’s gesture and the influence he exerts, Olujide-Poko said, has already boosted the profile of the Abuja Lawyers League and its objective, which is to serve as a platform for networking, building relationships and promoting camaraderie among members of the legal community, as well as a reminder that lawyers are not just legal professionals, but distinct individuals with diverse interests and talents.
Senior members of the Unity Bar (as the Abuja Bar is called) who graced the occasion, also lauded Chukwuka Ikwuazom, SAN for his intervention and dedication to the legal profession, which they described as an inspiration to all.
This year’s edition of the football showcase will witness an upgrade in terms of prize money, with the male category seeing an increase from N250,000, N200,000 and N150,000 to N400,000, N300,000 and N200,000 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers respectively.
Female lawyers will, for the first time, have a separate League, to run concurrently with their male counterparts, and the first edition for which females would not be paying registration fees. Prize monies range from N200,000, N150,000 and N100,000 for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers respectively.
This year’s tournament, which is scheduled to commence on March 4, 2023 and run till May 13, 2023, will feature 24 teams in the male category, while 6 teams will be participating for the female category.
