In spite of, or perhaps because of, his background in law and academia, Nigeria’s vice-president Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, has found himself an unlikely but no less eloquent advocate of many causes, right from his days as the Attorney General of Lagos State up to his present position.
He played that role to the hilt in his opening address at the 2021 Law Week of the Lagos Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, in which called for the enthronement of technology as the vehicle of choice in the practice of law and the dispensation of justice in Nigeria. In his speech, which, appropriate enough, was delivered virtually, Osinbajo noted that the current global marketplace has become so tech-driven that the legal profession, as pivotal as it is toward the good ordering of society, is being threatened by the seismic changes being brought about by the new industrial revolution. The profession, he said, is now faced with the option of either adapting quickly to these changes, or risk dwindling into irrelevance.
According to the nation’s No. 2 citizen, this understanding is even more relevant to the judiciary, that bastion of conservatism where cases can take months and even years to resolve thanks to bottlenecks of all kinds. It is time, he declared, for our court system and the entire administration of justice ecosystem to master the use of technology, like other sectors of the nation’s life and economy.
Noting the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Ross in the resolution of legal issues by law firms especially in the advanced countries o the world, Osinbajo insisted that the Nigerian and Judge cannot afford to be left behind.
