According to Pat Utomi, a political economy professor, “people in power” ordered a coup against Nigerians “by offering us a government we are not sure exists.”
The professor spoke in response to the presidency’s allegations that “disgruntled religious and former political figures” are collaborating with “foreign powers” to destabilize President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
According to Femi Adesina, the president’s special advisor on media and publicity, the administration has “unimpeachable proof” of a plot to enlist representatives of certain ethnic groups and lawmakers to vote no faith in Buhari and “send the land into more chaos.”
In an interview with PUNCH on Sunday, Utomi called the comment “silly.”
“I’ve been following the amusing conversations with some who claim that certain people are plotting a coup by holding a conference; it’s ridiculous in the extreme, because those in charge are the ones who have ordered a coup against the Nigerian people by giving us a government we’re not sure exists.
They then accuse people who wish to gather,” he added.
The scholar, who is also the president of the Centre for Values in Leadership, claims that Buhari’s government is unconcerned about the needs of its people.
Commenting on the call for the resignation of Isa Pantami, minister of communications and digital economy, over pro-Al-Qaeda views, Utomi said the federal government is “almost offensively intolerant” to what Nigerians think.
Although Utomi said he has no personal judgment on the issue, he noted that the Buhari’s administration has lost legitimacy and that the democratic order has failed.
He added that Nigeria needs a government of national unity to restore confidence of the people.
“Leaders should provide leadership; democracy needs to be sensitive to the people. The unfortunate situation with the current reality is that the political class, especially the executive, is totally insensitive to the Nigerian people, almost offensively intolerant of what Nigerians think,” he said.
“In fact, if you wanted Pantami to go, the thing to tell the government is “Pantami should stay” and they will do the exact opposite because they have total disregard for the Nigerian people.
“As a result, I have no opinion about whether Pantami should stay or go.
The problem is that the whole political order has abandoned us.
What Nigeria wants is for something really drastic to be done to rebuild faith in democracy.
“Right now, this regime’s prestige is gone.
I agree that one of the ways we can move forward is to form an immediate government of national unity to see how we can restore any dignity to government.”
