Zamfara group demands governor’s resignation over insecurity

The Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability in the North-West (COGGAN), a civic group based in the North-West, has called on Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to resign, citing the government’s failure to deliver on campaign promises, particularly in tackling insecurity and improving basic education.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by its president, Alhaji Ibrahim Anka, the group said the Lawal administration “has not met expectations since taking office in 2023.”

COGGAN reminded the public that during the 2023 campaigns, Governor Lawal had pledged to end banditry within his first three months in office.

However, the group pointed out that more than a year into his tenure, insecurity remains widespread across many parts of the state.

The coalition expressed deep concern over the continued attacks on communities, disruptions to farming activities, and the adverse impact on rural markets and education.

“The situation has left many residents vulnerable and unable to carry out their daily lives safely,” the statement added.

On education, the group criticised what it described as the government’s limited progress in addressing key challenges in the sector.

It said Zamfara continues to face “poor access to quality basic education,” and called for stronger efforts to improve school infrastructure and learning conditions.

COGGAN also urged the state government to be more transparent and accountable in the management of public funds, including federal allocations and special intervention funds.

The group emphasized the importance of clear communication about how government resources are being used for development.

Concluding its statement, the group reiterated its call for Governor Lawal’s resignation, insisting that “the people of Zamfara deserve leadership that prioritises their safety, education, and welfare.”
