The Chairman of the Welfare Committee of the.Nigerian Bar Association NBA), Mr. Yakubu C. Maikyau, SAN, has described the theme of the Town Hall Meeting of the NBA’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL) which took place on Monday, February 28, 2022, as a veritable eye-opener and a call to arms on Nigerian lawyers.
Before now, the learned silk said, the Nigerian legal community had taken the non-justiciability of Chapter 2 of the Nigerian Constitution for granted – a situation which has prevented them from seeking innovative ways of enforcing the provisions of that important chapter (which deals with government’s mandatory obligation to ensure the socio-economic rights of the people.
Speaking during the interactive session at the end of one of the panel discussions at the Town Hall meeting held at the prestigious Marriott Hotel Ikeja in Lagos, Maikyau lamented the fact that, except for the likes of Mr. Femi Falana SAN and a handfull of others, Nigerian lawyers see their work as only a means of livelihood, thereby insulating themselves from the imperative of challenging the status quo as far as Chapter 2 was concerned.
He joined Mr. Falana and others in giving kudos to the leadership of a rejuvenated NBA under its dynamic President, Olumide Akpata, for creating the environment for this paradigm shift.
