The Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON) is holding her South-South Regional Conference in ASABA and I simply had to attend the opening plenary today.
There were certainly many human reasons responsible for my election as NBA National Publicity Secretary (afterall I polled more than 17k votes) in the just concluded election, but two stood out – CLASFON and Asaba.
I am Muslim and my respected opponent is Christian. But without prior knowledge and any politicking on my part, I got the support and goodwill of the leadership and members of CLASFON. In fact, CLASFON was the first and earliest group of lawyers that adopted me as her candidate. I understand there was an election amongst the executives and I got the majority votes.
I am Yoruba, but I practise in Asaba, state capital of Delta State. My illustrious contender is an indigene of Delta State. On the election day, I was faraway in Abuja, but Asaba members (majority of whom are from Delta State) voted for me and made my candidacy a project to be delivered.
Do not get me wrong, we’ve got bigots amongst us who exploit the twin edges of religion and tribe for selfish ends. But when we remove the blindfolds, we see what actually is clear – our belief in the merit of the person before us, without consideration of the name we call him/her and the name he/she calls God – the Disposer of all affairs.
