The United States government has banned employees in China from having romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.

According to the Associated Press, former US Ambassador Nicholas Burns implemented the policy before leaving his post.

The new policy was tested in the summer of 2024, banning US government employees in China from having “romantic and sexual relations” with Chinese citizens employed as support staff and guards at five consulates in China, as well as at the United States embassy.

The policy was announced to American government staff stationed in China in January.

Any American government staff who violate the policy will be required to leave China.

However, the policy does not apply to US employees stationed outside of China.
