A law student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, identified as Ajana Isabella, has reportedly died after being denied access to her diabetes medication, sparking outrage among students and calls for justice.
Isabella, a resident of Elmada Hostel, was said to have lost her room key alongside her roommates and needed a spare to retrieve her insulin.
When they approached the hostel mistress, simply identified as Madam Bright, they were allegedly asked to pay the sum of N120,000 before a spare key could be provided.
Sources said the students pleaded with the hostel management, explaining that Isabella, who was diabetic, urgently needed her medication. Their appeal, however, was allegedly rebuffed.
“She was visibly distressed and weak. We begged Madam Bright to open the room or give us a key because Ajana needed her insulin, but she insisted we must pay N120,000. We were still trying to raise the money when Ajana collapsed,” one of the students who craved anonymity recounted.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, 6th July. Isabella was rushed to the hospital by fellow students but sadly died on Wednesday, 9th July.
The development has since stirred anger within the university community, with students taking to social media to demand accountability using the hashtag #Justice4Ajana.
“We cannot watch our fellow students die because of inhumane hostel policies. This was avoidable,” a student activist stated.
Efforts to reach the management of Elmada Hostel and Madam Bright for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The university authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
