Calabar, Nigeria – March 16, 2024 – The University of Calabar is proud to announce its upcoming 36th Convocation Ceremony, set to be a remarkable 10-day event celebrating academic excellence and achievement. The ceremony, as announced by the University Registrar, Amb. Gabriel O. Egbe, fcai, is slated to commence on March 14th and culminate on March 23rd, 2024 and will feature a series of events showcasing the University’s commitment to education, research, and community engagement.
Under the leadership of Prof. Florence Banku Obi, as the 11th Vice Chancellor as well as 1st female Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, the University has embarked on a journey of transformation and academic advancement. Prof. Obi’s visionary leadership has propelled the University to new heights, fostering an environment of innovation, excellence, and inclusivity.
One of the highlights of the convocation ceremony is the Staff Meritorious Awards, a prestigious recognition of outstanding service and dedication to the University. Instituted by Vice Chancellor Florence Banku Obi in 2023, the Meritorious Awards honour staff members who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to their roles and have made significant contributions to the University’s success.
During the 2nd edition of the Meritorious Awards ceremony held on March 15th, 2024, the Vice Chancellor delivered an inspiring message, urging staff to strive for excellence in their endeavors. Drawing from her own experiences, Prof. Obi emphasized the importance of diligence, perseverance, and dedication in achieving success. She shared personal anecdotes to illustrate the impact of hard work and commitment, encouraging staff to continue to uphold the values of integrity and excellence, even when it seems that there may go unrewarded. She assured them that there is always someone watching and at the appropriate time, they will be rewarded.

Among the awardees were Prof. Anim Ajake and Prof. Susan Ohen, recognized as Best Deans.
The staff with the Highest citation count was Prof. Martin Madu Merimikwu with over 6,000 citations while the award for outstanding patent right inventor went to Dr. Fina Faithpraise Otosi. Prof. Peter Chukwuemeka Okafor, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Linkages and Collaborations, won the award for the staff with the highest H-Index.
In the category of Outstanding Lecturers, there were 26 awardees carefully selected from thousands of Lecturers from all the Faculties of the University.
For the Faculty of Law, Anne Uruegi Agi won the Meritorious Service award and was acknowledged as the most Outstanding Lecturer in the Faculty of Law for the year 2023. She was recognised and commended by the University management and Senate for her Meritorious, industriousness and dedication to duty in ensuring that the objectives and goals of the University are achieved.
