UK court to revisit drug dealer’s deportation

The United Kingdom Home Office has said the deportation case of a Nigerian, Olajiire Shoyombo, who was convicted for drug trafficking, will be reviewed in a lower tribunal court.

Shoyombo was jailed for three years and four months in 2023 after being convicted at the Nottingham Crown Court of two offences related to the supply of heroin and crack cocaine.

Earlier, the Nigerian had won a deportation case, allowing him to stay in the UK under the “private life exception.”

A report by the BBC, however, stated that the convicted drug dealer’s deportation matter would be reheard after the Home Office admitted making a mistake accepting he had been a lawful UK resident for most of his life.

In his initial argument, the Nottingham-based man pleaded he should not be deported to Nigeria, as he would face “very significant obstacles” if returned to his home country.

The Home Office decided to review his case following revelations by tribunal documents that Shoyombo had resided in the UK unlawfully for more than eight years after arriving on a visitor’s visa in 2005.

He was later granted leave to stay during the period of 2014 and 2022, totalling around nine years of lawful residence.

A Home Office spokesperson said, “We are doing everything in our power to contest this case, and having successfully appealed against it, it will now be reheard. We are taking immediate action to ensure immigration rules are respected and enforced.”

The official said this after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper vowed to clarify deportation rules and said she would give judges clearer guidance on how to interpret human rights claims and evaluate public interest.
