The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) America has applauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State for his swift response in establishing the humanitarian camp for internally displaced people, IDP, in Okuama.
The group also commended the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers led by HRM Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo; the Ese Gam Owe – led UPU worldwide; and the Management Committee of Ewu Okuma IDP camp headed by Mr Abraham Ogbodo, for their unwavering support for Okuama community.
Speaking through its President General, Olorogun Abel Dafiaghor, during a visit to the Ewu Urhobo IDP camp in Otor-Ewu, Ughelli South LGA, the UPU America said the humanitarian camp came when the people of Okuama were in desperate need of refuge, stressing that Oborevwori’s swift action provided the people with a huge relief from their agony and despair. It donated relief materials and food items to camp including cows, cartons of noodles, bags of rice, and bags of beans, among many others.
Dafiaghor: “We are also overwhelmed by the news that the state government has begun the rebuilding of Okuama, starting with the construction of a health centre and a classroom block. Your Excellency, for this and more, we are deeply grateful for your kind gestures.
“Indeed, our people are deeply rooted in their ancestral lands over the untold incident that occurred in March this year, although as you are in camps, it’s my fervent hope, bolstered by the assured and empirical commitment of the governor, that our Okuama brethren will soon return to their home where they belong but at this temporary camp, we will do our best to ease your challenges.
“We will stand with you and we will continue to support you until you finally return to your ancestral homeland. Hopefully, other Okuama indigenes still in military detention will be released through the rule of law.
