– Calls for a New Generation of Ethical, Tech-Driven Legal Leaders
The Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN), in collaboration with the Leadership Academy for the African Continent, recently held a one-day leadership summit with the theme Empowering Future Bar Leaders: Innovation, Technology and Excellence in Leadership.
Delivering the keynote address at the summit, Dr. Ubani, SAN, charged law students and young lawyers across the country to rise to the challenge of the digital age by embracing technology, innovation, and integrity in the pursuit of justice.
In his thought-provoking address, Dr. Ubani noted that the future of the legal profession lies in the hands of those who can creatively apply emerging technologies to advance justice delivery.
> “The law you are studying today is no longer confined to dusty libraries or paper-filled chambers. Artificial intelligence now assists in legal research, blockchain is redefining contracts, and even the courtroom has gone virtual,” he said.
According to the learned silk, the next generation of great lawyers will not necessarily be those who memorise the most statutes or case laws, but those who leverage technology to make justice more accessible, faster, and affordable for all.
He highlighted real-world innovations such as mobile apps providing free legal advice to indigent citizens, blockchain registries that secure land ownership, and AI tools that help judges manage court backlogs.
> “These are not dreams – they are realities in progressive jurisdictions. Nigeria and Africa need you to bring such innovations home,” he challenged the students.
However, Dr. Ubani warned that innovation without integrity is dangerous, stressing that “technology without character leads to destruction.” He urged the next generation of lawyers to uphold the highest standards of honesty and discipline, reminding them that true leadership is measured by service and sacrifice, not titles or applause.
> “Excellence in leadership means you do not cut corners. You do not compromise your values. Aim not only to be successful but to be significant—to make a lasting difference,” he admonished.
He observed that while the digital revolution has democratized expression through social media and enhanced efficiency through automation, it has also amplified defamation, bias, and privacy violations.
Hence, he called on future lawyers to be the moral compass of society, capable of balancing innovation with ethics and progress with principle.
Dr. Ubani concluded his keynote with a resounding call to action:
> “Do not wait for the future – be the future. Dare to innovate. Embrace technology. Strive for excellence. And above all, lead with courage and integrity. If you do this, you will not only transform the legal profession; you will transform Nigeria, Africa, and indeed, the world.”
The summit drew participation from law students, legal educators like Hon Justice Yahaya Mohammed, Madam Mohammed Adama, Dr Franklin Chinagorom Ogbu, Aisha Abdu Mohammed, Tunde Adejumo, etc and young practitioners from across the country, all inspired by Dr. Ubani’s message of ethical innovation and transformative leadership in the digital era.
