Trump cancels $400m grants for Columbia University over antisemitism allegation

President Donald Trump of the United States on Friday cancelled grants and contracts totalling $400 million to Columbia University in New York City due to its inaction in addressing the persistent harassment of Jewish students.

According to the General Services Administration, in a joint statement with the Department of Justice, the Department of Education, and the Department of Health and Human Services, the cancelled funds would be deducted from the $5 billion in grants committed to Columbia.

Columbia has been at the centre of campus protests, with demonstrators calling for an end to US support for Israel in response to civilian deaths and the humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s assault on Gaza.

There have been allegations of both antisemitism and Islamophobia in protests and counter-protests.

Columbia has previously stated that it has made efforts to tackle antisemitism.

“Cancelling these taxpayer funds is our strongest signal yet that the federal government is not going to be party to an educational institution like Columbia that does not protect Jewish students and staff,” said Leo Terrell, who leads the Justice Department’s antisemitism task force.
