The Gombe State Police Command has concluded its investigation into the tragic Easter Monday incident in Billiri Local Government Area, where a truck driver rammed into a Christian procession, killing five people and injuring 21 others.
The Command confirmed on Friday that the truck driver, identified as Usman Muhammad, 28, of Afghanistan Quarters, Gombe, will be arraigned in court on charges related to reckless driving and causing death by dangerous driving.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, stated that the suspect will face a two-count charge.
“The driver of the truck, one Usman Muhammed ‘M’, 28 years of Afghanistan Quarters, has been formally charged with (1) Inconsiderate Driving and (2) Causing Death by Dangerous Driving, and the matter will proceed to court. The Chief Magistrate Court Seven (7) will be handling the legal proceedings,” he said.
The incident, which occurred during a peaceful Easter procession, sparked widespread grief and condemnation across the state. Families of the victims and members of the Christian community in Billiri have been demanding justice.
According to DSP Abdullahi, the Police are committed to ensuring accountability and have received strong support from the public throughout the investigation.
“We extend our appreciation to all members of the public who provided information and support during the investigation. Any additional inquiries or relevant information can still be directed to the officer in charge of the State Motor Traffic Department at Police Area Command Gombe, Gombe State. Further updates will be shared as the legal process continues,” the police spokesperson added.
The arraignment of the suspect is expected to mark the beginning of the judicial process aimed at addressing the fatal incident and delivering justice to the victims and their families.
