TRCN Vows To Transform Teaching Profession In Nigeria

The chairman of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and vice chairman (North East) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Mustapha Salihu, has vowed to fulfill the mandate of the Council in regulating and professionalising teaching in Nigeria.

Salihu gave the indication when he assumed office as the board chairman of the TRCN in Abuja.

The event was attended by education stakeholders and key figures within the APC, including House of Representatives member, Aliyu Wakili Boya (Fofure/Song Federal Constituency, Adamawa State), Director of Election Management, Mallam Tasiu Mohammed, Bello Baballo, APC North-East Director of Protocol, and Barr. Wale Afolabi, (SAN), among others.

The occasion marked the beginning of a new leadership era for the Governing Board of the Council, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening the teaching profession in Nigeria.

In his address, Comrade Mustapha outlined his vision for the Board, emphasizing his dedication to ensuring that TRCN fulfills its mandate of regulating and professionalising teaching in Nigeria.

He highlighted the need for a structured and well-monitored system where teacher education, certification, and continuous professional development align with international best practices. His administration, he assured, would focus on improving teacher quality, enforcing discipline, fostering professionalism, and ensuring that educators receive the recognition and rewards they deserve.

He promised to work with the Federal Ministry of Education to make sure every teacher in Nigeria is registered with TRCN with the use of dedicated portal. He further emphasised the need to bring proprietors of private schools on board

Furthermore, he stressed that under his leadership as Board Chairman, TRCN would not only regulate the teaching profession but also work towards elevating its status to match global standards. This includes strengthening teacher training programmes, implementing policies that promote excellence, and ensuring that only qualified and competent individuals are allowed to practice as teachers in Nigeria.

In her welcome remarks, Dr. Stella-Maria Nwokeocha, the Acting Registrar/Chief Executive of TRCN, expressed confidence in the leadership of the new chairman. She assured him of the full cooperation and support of the council’s staff, emphasising their commitment to ensuring the successful execution of his policies and directives.

She further reiterated that TRCN remained steadfast in its mission to uphold the integrity of the teaching profession, working collaboratively with relevant stakeholders to drive positive reforms in Nigeria’s education sector.
