The Legal Business Conference 2021 which held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the 18th of May, 2021, was a great opportunity for Stakeholders to discuss issues on entertainment law and business as well as the opportunities in the Entertainment Industry.
At the Conference, matters that may arise from the rapport between entertainment law and business, the role of lawyers in the entertainment industry, as well as the potential impacts and opportunities of the AfCFTA on the creative industry, were discussed elaborately.
While delivering his keynote address at the Conference, the former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law, Yahaya Maikori, noted that the role of lawyers in the entertainment industry includes, but not limited to, general counsel of the client, education, and advocacy, advisory services, brand protection, and management services.
He identified some of the issues confronting the smooth relationship of entertainment law and business as lack of sanctity of contract, slow court processes, the effect of technology on law, subsistence nature of the industry, suspicious relationship between the Solicitors and Creatives, lack of industry knowledge and expertise, DIY Culture and others.
A lawyer in the entertainment industry is expected to not only have substantial knowledge of contract negotiation and execution but also understand the nitty-gritty of what obtains in the industry itself and all the major sectors therein.
Experts mentioned that, for lawyers to thrive in the entertainment industry, they must keep learning, especially from the industry players, and understand the entertainment business.
There is a need for lawyers to be more entrepreneurial in their thinking, such that they explore the entertainment industry and take the opportunities therein.
