No fewer than 31 suspects have been arrested in Kano State by the State Joint Task Force Committee on Security Restoration and Youth Rehabilitation during a series of targeted clearance operations against thuggery and substance abuse across several black spots in the metropolis.

The operation, which took place between May 10 and 14, was led by Dr. Yusuf Mata and covered areas including Dorayi, Ja’in, Sharada, Unguwar Dabai, Dukawa, Kabuga, Kofar Mata and the neighbourhood.

According to a statement on Friday, the Kano State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the intelligence-led operations resulted in the arrest of 25 suspected thugs and six alleged drug dealers.

The task force also recovered four dane guns, nine knives and cutlasses, three clubs (Gora), and significant quantities of narcotic substances.

Other items seized during the operation include three and a half parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis (Wiwi), 173 pieces of suspected Exol tablets, and other intoxicants.

The task force said among those arrested were notorious figures believed to be the arrowheads of long-standing thuggery-related violence in Dorayi Quarters, identified as Dan Abba, Bola, Baka Kashi, Ramos, Abba Maciji, and Abdul Baki.

“All 25 suspected thugs have been charged to Magistrate Court Number 16 on Zungeru Road, Kano and remanded in custody,” the committee said, adding that the six suspected drug dealers, including a notorious kingpin identified as Rabi’u Hamza, were handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

Authorities hailed the operation as a milestone achievement in the fight against thuggery and drug abuse, particularly in Dorayi Quarters, which has battled such issues for over two decades.

“This successful operation that led to the arrest of the insecurity arrowheads in Dorayi will bring a lasting solution to the violence that has plagued the area,” the committee noted.

The committee, comprising personnel from multiple security agencies and government bodies, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safer, drug-free, and peaceful Kano.

It vowed to remain resolute and proactive in sanitising the streets and restoring calm across troubled communities.

“The fight against criminality in all its forms continues,” the statement concluded.
