The Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission has announced that the local government council elections across the state will hold on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
The Chairman of the Commission, Philip Duwe, disclosed this on Thursday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Nigeria Union of Teachers Conference Hall in Jalingo.
Duwe said the tenure of the current council chairman will expire in November 2025, prompting the Commission to begin preparations for the polls in line with the law.
“As a Commission, we are committed to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state,” he said.
The TSIEC chairman used the opportunity to issue a formal notice for the conduct of the elections and called on civil servants intending to contest to resign from service at least 90 days before the election date, in line with the provisions of the electoral law.
He emphasised the importance of internal party democracy and urged political leaders to provide an enabling environment for the electorate to freely choose their preferred candidates.
“Political parties must conduct transparent primaries. It is the right of the people to choose, and no one should impose candidates on them,” he added.
Duwe also commended Governor Agbu Kefas for what he described as bold reforms aimed at repositioning the local government system in the state.
According to him, the governor’s efforts are timely and crucial for the deepening of grassroots governance.
Stakeholders present at the meeting included political party chairmen, representatives of civil society organisations, security agencies, and the media.
