A suspected member of the Eiye confraternity, identified simply as Ope, has been reportedly hacked to death by rival cultists in the Ojaigbo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
PUNCH Metro gathered from an anti-cultism advocacy platform, Confra Naija, on Tuesday that the incident occurred on Monday.
According to the platform, the deceased was said to be a former “number four” member of the Eiye group prior to his death.
He was allegedly attacked by suspected members of the Aye confraternity, also known as the Neo-Black Movement, under circumstances that remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
“Yesterday, an Eiye (ACN) cultist named Ope was killed by Aye (NBM) in Ojaigbo, Ibadan, Oyo State. Ope was said to be a former number four man in the Eiye cult. The exact reason for his killing is still unclear at this time,” Confra Naija stated.
The platform added that the assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
It further clarified that although there were initial claims suggesting the killing occurred in Lagos, findings indicated that the incident took place in Ibadan, where the victim’s body was later discovered on Monday night.
In a video seen by PUNCH Metro, the victim was observed squatting and pleading with his attackers before the assault. Other images from the scene showed his lifeless body in the same location, with his hands tied.
Efforts to get a reaction from the Oyo State Police Command were unsuccessful. Calls made to the Police Public Relations Officer, Olushola Ayanlade, were not answered, and a text message sent to him had not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.
Cult-related violence has heightened tension in parts of the South-West, with residents calling for increased security patrols to prevent possible reprisal attacks.
PUNCH Metro had reported on February 4 that at least four persons were feared dead following separate cult-related clashes in different parts of Lagos State.
The incidents, according to videos and photographs circulated after the violence, occurred between Wednesday and Monday in communities including Iyana-Ipaja and Aboru in Alimosho Local Government Area; Badore and Olokonla in Ajah, Eti-Osa Local Government Area; as well as Onipanu near Fadeyi and Satellite Town.
