A postgraduate student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Abubakar Isah Mokwa, has been arrested for allegedly criticising Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Mokwa, who studies Agricultural Economics and Extension, was reportedly picked up by the police from his off-campus residence in Lapai on Thursday night. His arrest followed a Facebook post where he criticised the governor’s performance.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest, saying it was based on a complaint involving cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and other related offences.
According to Abiodun, Mokwa was arrested around 11.00pm on October 23 and later transferred to the State Police Command headquarters in Minna for investigation.
He added that the student remains in custody while the case is being handled.
