The Senator representing Edo South in the Red Chambers, Neda Imasuen has urged the government and the Nigeria Labour Congress to reach a compromise to avert the planned strike by labour unions.
He warned that the country may not survive another shutdown due to its failing economy.
Neda who spoke to journalists in Benin on Sunday, lamented that interest rates and cost of goods and services were on the rise as people battle daily to survive in the face of dwindling economic fortunes.
He said that the Central Bank must concentrate on policies that would make the naira strong again, noting that the current situation would not aid the country’s development. He also urged the government to fix the roads and address the infrastructural deficit in the country.
“The best that can happen is for the federal government and the labour union to reach a compromise over what is needed to alleviate the suffering of the masses due to the removal of subsidy.
“There is a lot of suffering in the country with the prices of goods and services on the rise daily. The naira is also in a free fall and there is no way we can develop under this situation. Roads are bad and it is difficult to move farm produce within a state not to talk between states.
“The government must address the infrastructural deficit and put the country on the part of development. It takes effort but it can be done,” he added.
Imasuen stated that the legislature makes enabling laws, calling on the executive to implement programmes that would better the lives of the people.
