Sokoto proposes three-year tenure for LG chairmen

The Sokoto State Government has endorsed a proposal to extend the tenure of local government council chairmen from two to three years.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development, Ibrahim Adare, made this known during a media interaction in Sokoto on Wednesday.

He noted that the proposed change was before the Sokoto State House of Assembly.

He explained that the proposed amendment was because the current two-year term is insufficient for elected chairmen to plan and execute meaningful projects that benefit their communities.

“Expecting tangible results in just two years is unrealistic. With a three-year term, council chairmen will have enough time to plan, implement, and complete impactful projects,” he said.

He described the proposal as aimed at deepening grassroots development and improving service delivery.

The commissioner recalled that a three-year tenure was previously in place during the administration of former Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

He said the reversal to two years had limited development at the grassroots.

On local government autonomy, he said the state government respects the Supreme Court judgment and supports steps that will strengthen local governance.

“The idea of granting more autonomy to LGs aligns with our vision. Local governments must function effectively, and this amendment is part of that push,” he added.

Speaking on achievements under Aliyu’s administration, he highlighted completed road projects, water supply initiatives, and mosque constructions.

On the resurgence of opposition parties like the African Democratic Congress, the commissioner welcomed political plurality but said the APC-led government remained focused on performance and delivering real value to the people.

He also acknowledged ongoing security challenges in some local government areas but said the state government has deployed resources and interventions that are yielding results.
