In Nigeria today, many things hinder our courts. Lack of infrastructure, available courtrooms for our judges to use, lack of equipment or adequate staffing and even insufficient stationary hinder the work of efficient Justice delivery.
One other thing that hinders our justice delivery system is the occasional court closures due to strikes like what is going on in Osun State
Now when these strikes happen and courts are closed, people who are in conflict with the law and are in detention suffer the most. But many other people suffer also even though those working within the Judiciary will still get their salaries at the end of the day.
We play with people’s lives in this country. Without the justice system we are all victims. Imagine the civil disputes unresolved…. Thats why citizens will take laws into their own hands or will seek the intervention of the police or a traditional ruler, then; we lawyers will cry fowl.
Where is our bar association that is always shouting ‘no work for lawyers’ where are they when citizens are crying for justice?
Can we not think outside the box?
In these times of virtual hearings and technologies some certain things do not need a courtroom for justice to be done
Can judges grant bail without using courtroom?.. YES!
Can Judges make orders and give rulings without a courtroom? YES!
Can judges hear parties or mediate without using a courtroom? YES!
Justice is not about the building it’s about what people do.
What are lawyers doing? What is NBA doing?
