Shutdown Social Media Platforms with the Name ‘NBA’ – Mahmoud Warns
President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud SAN has asked persons using “Nigerian Bar Association” to run social media platforms without prior authorization from the NBA to immediately shut down such sites or face the wrath of the Association.

He made this call at the ongoing NBA National Executive Council Meeting in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Mr. Mahmoud said “It has come to the notice of the NBA that many people including some lawyers, run platforms or handles in the name of the Association without the authority of the NBA. He said, this is unacceptable and perpetrator of such must desist from the act and shut those sites and also remove the name NBA as site I.D.”
The President said, “This problem is not limited to Nigeria as the Law Society of England and Wales are also combating similar problems and has constituted a committee to come up with recommendations.”
“I want to caution that we must discourage the use of social media to disparage our colleagues or our profession.”
Many colleagues take to social media to make reckless accusations and allegations or disparaging comments against their colleagues or leaders of the profession.
Mahmoud said, “Just a couple of days ago a young lawyer went to the media to accuse me and the NBA of theft of his art work and presenting it to President Muhammadu Buhari without his knowledge or consent.”
“The allegation was very irresponsible and exposed the association to ridicule. It is unacceptable,” he said.
The NBA President said appropriate disciplinary action will be taking on culprit.
He pleaded with all leaders of the profession to moderate their conduct in this regard. He said, “Anything that is capable of exposing the profession to mockery or disrepute must be guided against.”
