Benue State Primary Health Care Board (BSPHCB), has said it missed out about 323,851 children in the various immunisation exercises, though those that were missed out were not missed out through any fault of the Board.
As part of plans to ensure that those that were missed out were immunised this time around, the BSPHCB, met with Stakeholders during a Town Hall meeting, held in Makurdi last weekend.
Recall that recently, BSPHCB, said that the project was targeted at the 12 LGAs in the state that performed below the recommended 85 percent and as such would target those that missed out completely as well as those that were under-immunised.
Executive Secretary (ES), BSPHCB, Mrs Grace Ashi Wende, who disclosed this in a chat with Daily Independent, also noted that the Agency targets to redeem about 65 percent of children that were missed out, in the ongoing immunisation exercise, tagged the big catch-up, that commenced last Friday, 13th December, 2023, across the 12 LGAs.
She explained that the meeting that had in session traditional and religious leaders, youth and women groups, as well as other key stakeholders was aimed at seeking their support towards the success of the exercise.
The LGAs that have been earmarked for the big catch-up, in which immunisation is currently ongoing, include Vandeikya, Ukum, Katsina-Ala, Okpokwu, Konshisha, Guma, Ado, Kwande, Ushongo, Gwer East, Buruku and Logo LGAs.
According to her, the Board which is working hand in hand with UNICEF has already sent to the affected LGAs about 842 teams, to ensure that the children that were missed out are immunised.
Meanwhile, the State Immunisation Officer (SIO), BSPHCB, Innocent Adega, observed that “Some of the children were missed out during COVID-19. In the heat of COVID-19, immunisation activities were interrupted and as a result of that, we were having those that were missed, which we call zero dose are immunised as well as those that were under-immunised.
“Apart from that because we have security compromised settlements which our health workers cannot go into such areas because we will need the security men to guard them into such areas, to vaccinate and come out, which we call hit-and-run.”
