It is no longer news that the Data Economy is here. From social media, to manufacturing, retail, health services, education, financial services, and all sectors of the economy, the battle for control and deriving benefits from data rages on.
With advances in Artificial Intelligence, Cloud and Decentralised computing, Big Data is now a huge factor of production and a game changer for social and economic development. Yet the Data Economy must be guided by data governance, which includes data protection and cybersecurity legislation, ethical business models, and technical standards. This realisation creates a tension that ought to be wisely managed.
In the light of the above, on the 26th of May 2021, the ICT Committee of the Section on Business Law (SBL) will be hosting a Webinar, themed: Regulating the Data Economy – The Next Frontier where salient issues on privacy, security and governance will be discussed
Furthermore, we realise that they are many who are less familiar with the fundamentals of Data Protection and so the NBA-SBL ICT Committee in conjunction with the Institute of Continuing Legal Education will hold a free MasterClass on May 27th & 28th 2021 to dissect the following topics in a very practical manner:
— Overview of Data Protection in Nigeria
— Regulatory Compliance to the Data Protection Framework
— Data Processing
— Data Protection Audit and Filing under the NDPR
— Data Protection Principles and Practices under the GDPR
These would be taught by practitioners with hands-on experience in the field, both from within our jurisdiction and internationally
