But What Did the Queen Really Think About Meeting Boris Johnson?
The monarch is notoriously mum when it comes to politics, but allow us to read between the lines anyway.

Though the Queen is politically neutral, her presence is often required at events of great political import, and it falls to royal-watchers to read between the lines. Does her purse say anything about how much she’s enjoying a visitor? Were her comments about “common ground” in a January speech really a veiled dig at Brexit? Was she happy that renovations kept the Trumps out of guest quarters in Buckingham Palace?
This week, she delayed a much-anticipated trip to her summer home in Scotland in order to meet with new Prime Minister Boris Johnson. On Wednesday, he met her in the Palace and the two made polite conversation in which, according to Johnson, the Queen revealed some sympathy for those poor, downtrodden politicians.
In the images that emerged, Johnson’s signature ruffled locks and eager smile are immediately apparent, proving that Britain has found their own answers to Donald Trump’s creative combing. But the Queen’s entire demeanor, while professional, also screams “I am going on vacation the minute you leave.” She’s dressed a little casually — by her standards, at least—and she’s holding onto her purse, even though she’s in her own house. (The purse is a frequent accessory at the Queen’s public appearances, but doesn’t always appear inside Buckingham Palace.) Johnson’s grasp on her hand is also a little awkward—it looks as though he’s only holding two or three of her fingers.
The Queen certainly looks like she’s planning to make a speedy exit, but the purse’s position might reveal that everything was actually going fine. In 2011, People reported that she would place her bag on the floor or make “the more dramatic gesture of spinning her ring” to indicate to staff that they should intervene. Since her bag is firmly on her left elbow, perhaps Johnson can sleep easy knowing that, while much of Britain may loathe him, Her Majesty isn’t one of them.
Probably!
