Many major streets across Adamawa State had police personnel stopping vehicles fitted with tinted glasses on Thursday as the Nigeria Police Force commenced enforcement of the law requiring all such vehicles to obtain permits.
The scenes were rare occurrences, as police presence had not been so evident in recent times.
The enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permits Law is being carried out in all 21 local government areas of the state, with a mobile court judge, among other personnel, deployed in each LGA.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Suleiman Nguroje, who gave an update on the exercise on Thursday evening, confirmed that motorists were reminded that only vehicles with a valid Tinted Glass Permit, obtained through www.possap.gov.ng could legally ply the roads.
“Non-compliance risks arrest and prosecution as prescribed by law,” Nguroje explained.
He added, however, that the state police command would ensure that the exercise is conducted with fairness and respect for citizens’ rights.
According to him, the command has warned officers against any form of extortion or harassment and encouraged members of the public to report any misconduct to the office of the Commissioner of Police, or to the Police Complaint Response Unit via 08065604764 or 08144214876.
