Police kill kidnappers, gunrunners, recover weapons

Some suspected kidnappers and gun runners allegedly responsible for terrorising several states across the nation, have been shot dead by officers of the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday.The statement read, “The FID-IRT of the Nigeria Police Force has recorded yet another feat in the ongoing fight against crime and criminality in the country, as part of the sustained efforts to cleanse the system of criminals, most especially kidnappers.“In the early hours of February 8, 2024, some notorious kidnappers and gunrunners, who have been terrorising Abuja, Kaduna, Kogi, and Nasarawa states, were neutralised by IRT operatives at their hideout around Gitata, along Keffi Gidan Wire Road, Nasarawa State. Similarly, four AK47 rifles, weapons, and a bag of ammunition were recovered.

“These neutralised individuals have also been involved in supplying arms to bandits operating within the same axis.”Adejobi added that the NPF would continue to employ all necessary measures to rid communities of criminal elements and maintain peace and order across the nation.Kidnapping and banditry had risen across the country since President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

The bandits have abducted several Nigerians and received ransoms in millions.Meanwhile, operatives of Federal Capital Territory Police Command, attached to Utako Divisional Headquarters, have apprehended six suspected armed robbers in an uncompleted hospital building marked as a black spot in Utako village, Abuja.Recovered from the suspects were a locally made pistol, two live cartridges, and wraps of substances suspected to be marijuana.The development was disclosed in a statement by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Friday.She noted that the suspects, hailing from neighbouring states bordering the FCT, were identified as Basara Hassan, Daniel Charles, Adamu Oshiaka, Chancy Asidi, and Saliu Al-Hassan.

The police spokeswoman further noted that investigation led to the arrest of Yusuf Iliyasu, alias Tablet, an ex-convict and the syndicate leader.
