The Enugu State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the killers of a worker with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, identified simply as Cosmas.
Cosmas was shot dead by suspected armed robbers in the Emene area of the state.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening while the deceased was returning from work.
According to reports by The Punch, a source privy to the incident – on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the media- said that the deceased victim was ambushed by gunmen who attempted to steal his vehicle.
According to the source, Cosmas resisted, prompting the attackers to open fire.
“He was returning from the depot when some gunmen suspected to be armed robbers double-crossed him at Emene. They tried to snatch his car but he refused. That was when they shot him right there on the spot,” the source disclosed.
Another source who simply identified himself as Johnson said residents within the area heard a gunshot and rushed to the scene, where they found Cosmas lying in a pool of blood.
“He was taken to the hospital by some Good Samaritans, but he was confirmed dead on arrival,” the source added.
A video sent to our correspondent showed the lifeless body of the victim on a hospital bed.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, in his response to our correspondent on Thursday, described it as a case of murder and said that the police had begun investigations.
“The incident occurred. It is a murder case, and the police have launched an investigation to apprehend the culprits,” Ndukwe said.
