The Jigawa State Police Command on Saturday confirmed that a communal clash in the state on Friday has left nine people dead and four others injured.
A communal clash, on Friday, in the Miga Local Government Area of the state claimed dozens of lives and left many hospitalised.
According to eyewitnesses, the clashes erupted suddenly, catching many off guard.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, in a statement, confirmed that the incident occurred between some communities in the Jahun Local Government Area, stating that scores of people were indeed reported dead, with some still receiving treatment in the hospital.
He said, “On 03/01/2025, information from Gululu village in Miga LGA indicated that a group of miscreants suspected to be Fulani broke into a shop and stole a quantity of hibiscus and other provisions.
“A team of villagers (Hausawa) traced their footprints to a Fulani Settlement Camp in Yankunama village, Jahun LGA.
“On sighting the team, the Fulanis started shooting the villagers with bows and arrows, as a result, four persons were seriously injured as the villagers mobilised and started attacking the Fulanis and setting their houses ablaze at various locations within Miga and Jahun LGAs.”
Adam added that, upon receipt of the report, a team of police officers from the Miga and Jahun Divisions rushed to the scene to assess the situation and restore peace and order.
He confirmed that unfortunately, “Nine bodies were recovered. The corpses were ferried to Jahun and Miga Hospitals, where the medical doctor on duty confirmed their deaths.”
It was learnt that the state Commissioner of Police, A.T Abdullahi, alongside the Area Commander of Dutse, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, the Mobile Policeman Commander EOD, and other senior officers have visited the scene of the crime.
An eyewitness and resident of Gululu village, Bala Wadan, said that, a stakeholder meeting was immediately convened and was attended by the speaker of the state House of Assembly, chairmen of the two LGAs, district heads, Miyetti Allah leadership, and vigilantes.
He added that the meeting was centred on maintaining law and order and avoiding violence, propaganda, and reprisal attacks.
In the meantime, patrols are being stepped up in the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
For now, the police spokesperson said the situation has been brought under control.
According to him, an investigation is currently underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
