The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, has announced a total ban on the sale, distribution, and use of fireworks, knockouts, bangers, and all categories of pyrotechnics across the state as Christmas and New Year festivities approach.

A statement issued on Tuesday by the state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Aya, said the directive is aimed at preventing fire outbreaks, injuries, security breaches, and other avoidable incidents commonly associated with the indiscriminate use of fireworks during the festive period.

“The CP emphasises that any person or group found engaging in the sale, possession, or use of fireworks, whether in private residences, public spaces, markets, or event centres, will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” Aya said.

He added, “The command will intensify patrols, surveillance activities, and targeted operations in all parts of the state.”

The Commissioner of Police also called on residents, traders, community leaders, and event organisers to adhere to the directive and cooperate fully with the police.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal activities involving fireworks to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency contacts.

According to reports, there have been several security breaches in the state in recent times.

This has prompted Governor Ahmed Ododo to issue a restriction order requiring social and religious activities to end by 4 p.m. daily until further notice.
