Police arrest six suspected cult members in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arrest of six suspected cult members in the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

According to Ndukwe, the suspects, who have confessed to their involvement in cult activities, were arrested by the Anti-Cultism Unit of the command while attempting to force people to be initiated into the Supreme Vikings Confraternity.

He said several items used for the initiation were recovered, including a gun, cutlasses, and alcoholic drinks.

The statement partly read: “Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command attached to the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, on 5th December 2025, acted on credible information, uncovered, and arrested six (6) male suspects for forcefully initiating victims into the Supreme Vikings Confraternity on 25th November 2025, at a forest in Ugwu Peak, Iva Valley, Enugu North Local Government Area (LGA).

“One (1) locally made double-barrelled pistol and four (4) cutlasses used for their criminal activities, and two (2) empty bottles of Squadron rum used for the initiation, were recovered from the suspects.

“The suspects include Edeh Francis Chigbo, a.k.a. ‘Saint’ (22), Ogbu Fabulous, a.k.a. ‘Nwakanwa’ (23), Odom Chiemerie, a.k.a. ‘Coded’ (28), Nweke Anayo, a.k.a. ‘Chaplet’ (22), Obumneme Obiechina, a.k.a. ‘Biggy’ (30), and Chigozie Ugbene, a.k.a. ‘God Bless’ (20).

“They all confessed to membership of the secret cult group and their involvement in the criminal acts, and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement partly read.

Cultism remains a persistent security challenge in many Nigerian states, particularly in the South-East, where secret cult groups have historically thrived among youths and students.

The Supreme Vikings Confraternity, one of several notorious secret societies in Nigeria, is known for its violent initiation practices, clashes with rival groups, and involvement in criminal activities, including extortion, assault, and illegal possession of firearms.

Enugu State has periodically reported cases of cult-related violence, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals during forced initiation ceremonies.

The state government and the police have, over the years, intensified efforts to curb cult activities, including the establishment of specialised Anti-Cultism Units within the police command and collaborations with local communities and youth organisations to raise awareness and prevent recruitment into these groups.
