Police arrest 14 suspects, recover weapons, cannabis in Niger

The Niger State Police Command has arrested 14 suspects for offences including thuggery, drug possession, housebreaking, theft, and receiving stolen property in different parts of Minna.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, who said the arrests followed a series of coordinated raids and intelligence-led operations.

According to the statement, on Saturday, around 9 p.m., police officers attached to ‘A’ and ‘B’ Divisions conducted raids at identified black spots across Tudun-Natsira, Baida, Angwan-Kaje, PZ Area, Sabon-Gari, Abdulsalam Quarters, and parts of Gwari Market in Minna.

“In continuation of the fight against thuggery and other social vices in Minna, on October 18, 2025, at about 9 p.m., police operatives attached to ‘A’ and ‘B’ Div conducted raids of black spots at Tudun-Natsira, Baida, Angwan-Kaje, PZ Area, Sabon-Gari, Abdulsalam Quarters, and parts of Gwari Market in Minna.

“During the raid operation, the following persons were arrested,” the statement partly read.

The suspects arrested include Yunusa Yusuf of Angwan-Kaje, found with suspected cannabis; Mubarak Lawan also found with suspected cannabis; Aliyu Magaji of PZ Area arrested with a sword, machete, and scissors; Ibrahim Kabiru of Saiko; and Abdullahi Yusuf of Gurara, both caught with 20 wraps of suspected cannabis.

“All suspects are under investigation and they will be charged to court for prosecution, while monitoring and raid operation continues,” Abiodun added.

In a separate case, nine persons were arrested for criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, theft, and receiving stolen property in the Bosso area of Minna.

The statement noted that on August 27, 2025, a report was received from a resident of the Bosso Low-Cost area that some hoodlums broke into a house on August 24 and stole four steel doors, two burglary proofs, 24 windows, 24 metres of borehole cable, and 12 bags of cement.

“Based on diligence investigation and technical intelligence, the following five suspects were arrested in connection to the crime within the month of October, 2025 — James Peter (22), Abdullahi Sani (26), Abubakar Mohammed Abba (17), Umar Usman Tasha (34), and Aliyu Usman Tasha (27), all of Bosso area, Minna,” the statement added.

The police spokesman said the suspects confessed to the crime and sold the stolen steel doors to Nasiru Umar of Angwan-Kanawa and Gambo Alhaji of Saiko for ₦17,000 and ₦18,000 respectively.

“The suspects confessed to the crime and sold the steel doors to one Nasiru Umar, 35, of Angwan-Kanawa, and Gambo Alhaji, 35, of Saiko, at the rate of ₦17,000 and ₦18,000 respectively.

“The burglaries were sold to Suleiman Isah, 25, and Usman Mohammed, 23, both of Hayin-Gwari. The four receivers were also arrested at different locations,” Abiodun stated.

He added that parts of the stolen items, two doors, four windows, and one burglary-proof door, were recovered, while the investigation was concluded and all suspects were charged to court on October 13, 2025.
