PDP Plans NEC Meeting After Supreme Court Judgment On Petition

Following the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming President Bola Tinubu’s victory, leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are taking steps to restructure the party. They intend to convene the 98th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting soon. The sacked Chairman of the PDP, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, had convened the last NEC meeting on September 8, 2022

The meeting was postponed earlier due to the petition filed by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential candidate in the last election, challenging Tinubu’s victory at the Presidential Election Petition Court and later at the Supreme Court.

Atiku’s case was dismissed by the PEPC on September 6, and his appeal at the Supreme Court on Thursday marked the end of his presidential ambition for now.

A high-ranking member of the PDP NWC, who preferred not to be named, confirmed the upcoming 98th NEC meeting after necessary consultations.

The source informed Sunday PUNCH that party leaders were currently consulting to determine the meeting date and the agenda topics to be discussed.

He stated, “You know you cannot just convene a NEC meeting like that. You have to consult and discuss many issues with stakeholders. These issues are numerous. They have to agree on them; they also have to agree on a suitable date before the party’s National Working Committee will announce the date.”

Regarding the meeting’s likely timing, the source added, “Anytime soon after consultation with the relevant organs of the party.”

The source also disclosed that the NEC meeting’s agenda would primarily focus on three major issues: establishing a reconciliation committee, conducting a review or assessment of the 2023 election, and addressing other pertinent matters.

Supporting this, Timothy Osadolor, a member of the PDP NEC and Deputy National Youth Leader, stated that it was now the appropriate time to convene the NEC meeting. He mentioned that the date for the meeting would be determined within the next few days.

When asked about the future of the acting National Chairman of the party, Umar Damagum, Osadolor remarked, “So far, the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has done a good job. When we gather to discuss our issues as a party, this (national chairmanship position) will be discussed too, but it is too early to go into details.”

Regarding the fate of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the G-5 group of ex-governors who rebelled against the party’s leadership during the elections (Nyesom Wike, Okezie Ikpeazu, Samuel Ortom, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi), Osadolor stated that the group is now history within the party.

Additionally, former National Secretary of the PDP, Umar Tsauri, emphasized that the party would recognize Tinubu as Nigeria’s “illegal president.”
