A chieftain of the Labour Party in Osun State, Gideon Aloba, has urged the Federal Government to demonstrate transparency and accountability in the management of public resources before implementing the new tax laws expected to take effect from January 1, 2026.
He said any administration that fails to properly account for public resources has no moral right to impose fresh tax obligations on citizens.
Aloba, a former House of Representatives candidate in the Ijesa South area of the state, said Nigerians should not be compelled to pay more taxes without first being shown how existing revenues are being spent.
The LP chieftain stated this in a statement shared with Saturday PUNCH, urging the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the tax law until it demonstrates transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
He said the plight of Nigerians, already weighed down by inflation, economic hardship and uncertainty, must be considered in every government policy.
“The Nigerian people must not be made to feel, once again, that their collective labour exists only to fund the extravagant lifestyles of the political elite. We therefore demand that the Federal Government open its financial books and make public all expenditures before proceeding with the implementation of the new tax regime.
“Governance cannot thrive in secrecy while citizens already burdened by hardship, inflation and economic uncertainty are asked to contribute more to the public purse,” he added.
Aloba, who contested the Ijesa South Federal Constituency seat in 2023, stressed that the Federal Government and its agencies owe Nigerians a clear, honest and comprehensive account of public spending before the new tax law takes effect.
He noted that while Nigerians were willing to pay taxes, the government must first prove it can be trusted with public funds, adding that the standards of tax discipline expected in developed countries must be matched by similar levels of responsibility and prudence by political leaders.
