Fintech company OPay has dismissed claims circulating on social media alleging that customer accounts were wiped, deposits lost or that the platform had shut down operations.
The company issued the clarification in a post shared on its official X handle on Friday, describing the rumours as “false, malicious, and misleading.”
“Our attention has been drawn to false, malicious, and misleading rumours in the media and on social platforms claiming that customer accounts have been wiped out, deposits lost, and operations shut down.
“These claims are entirely false, misleading and fabricated. All customer accounts and deposits remain safe, intact, and fully accessible, and OPay continues to operate normally — financially strong, and committed to providing secure, reliable, and innovative payment and financial services to millions across Nigeria,” OPay said.
The fintech stressed that, as a licensed financial institution, it operates under strict regulatory supervision.
“As a licensed institution regulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), with customer deposits insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), OPay maintains strict adherence to regulatory standards, transparency, and customer protection,” the company said.
The fintech also warned individuals circulating the claims to desist, saying it would take legal action where necessary.
“We urge anyone spreading such claims to come forward, and anyone with verifiable proof that funds were removed from their accounts without their authorisation to present it.
“OPay will pursue appropriate legal action against perpetrators spreading these false rumours and fabricated claims,” the statement added.
The company advised customers to rely solely on official communication from its verified platforms.
“We urge the public to disregard such misinformation and rely only on updates from OPay’s official verified social media handles and website,” it said.
The clarification comes after many users on social media reported experiencing temporary access issues on the OPay app on Tuesday, a disruption that lasted for several minutes before being resolved.
OPay has continued to debunk rumours regarding its operations, urging customers to ignore unverified posts circulating online.
