Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has warned contractors handling ongoing projects across the state to adhere strictly to agreed timelines and specifications or risk termination of their contracts.
The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, issued a statement on Wednesday, highlighting Okpebholo’s concerns after he inspected several road and drainage projects in the state.
During the inspection, Okpebholo expressed displeasure over the slow pace of work, particularly in the Orior-Ozolua community, where residents complained that the contractor was frequently absent from the site.
The governor and his entourage visited several project locations, including Orior-Ozolua Community, Orior Uteh Palace Road, New Uteh Road, Ekiuwa Quarters, and Upper Ekenhuan open drain by the Nigerian Army Cantonment.
In all areas, residents welcomed him with appreciation for the ongoing projects.
At Orior-Ozolua Community in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, a resident, Mr. Sylvester Igbinovia, voiced frustration over the contractor’s sluggish progress.
“Mr. Governor, this contractor is just too slow on this job. They close before 2 pm when they are on site, but most of the time, they are not even here. They showed up today because they knew you were coming,” Igbinovia said.
Okpebholo personally inspected the drainage construction in the area and was dismayed to find that the contractor had not followed the specified dimensions.
Confronting the contractor, he issued a stern warning:
“Why did you reduce the width of the drain? You have altered both sides. Look at my face—if you do not follow the specifications and deliver quality work, I will revoke this contract at any moment without fear or favour. The resources belong to the people and must be used effectively and efficiently.”
The governor’s warning underscores his administration’s commitment to ensuring that public funds are properly utilised and that contractors deliver high-quality projects.
