The Osun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a shooting and reckless pursuit incident involving some of its officers, which allegedly led to a couple being hospitalised following a crash in the Osogbo area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, sparked outrage after reports emerged that a young couple travelling in a vehicle allegedly fled from officers following an altercation during which shots were said to have been fired.
The couple were said to have crashed into a ditch after allegedly being chased by the police team that had stopped them during a routine stop-and-search operation.
Reacting to the incident in a statement on Monday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had begun an immediate review of the matter.
Ojelabi said, “The Command has commenced an immediate review of the incident reported to have occurred around the Itaolokan Junction to the Oke Ayepe area in Osogbo.
“Preliminary findings are being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts.”
The police added that the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims at the hospital.
“They are responding to treatment. The command has taken it upon itself to take care of the medical bills,” the statement noted.
Confirming that officers linked to the incident were being investigated, the command stated that “a team of officers suspected to have been involved in the act are currently under investigation.”
“Any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, will not be condoned. Officers found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary consequences,” the statement added.
The command also called on members of the public to assist with credible information.
“The police command enjoins anyone with verifiable information, video evidence, or first-hand accounts of the incident to come forward to assist the investigation, as justice will be served and pursued based on facts and evidence,” the statement added.
The command urged members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course, assuring that justice would be pursued based on facts and evidence.
