Odinkalu Faults Uzodinma Over Leadership Crisis in Imo Judiciary: Courts Stalled, Lawyers Strained

Prominent human rights lawyer and former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, has criticized Governor Hope Uzodinma for allowing a leadership vacuum to cripple Imo State’s judiciary.

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Odinkalu warned that the absence of a substantive Chief Judge has forced vacation courts to shut down, imposing “unimaginable” hardship on litigants and court users. He added that members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the state are bearing heavy financial strain as judicial activities remain grounded.

Imo currently has neither a Chief Judge nor an Attorney General, despite clear directives from the National Judicial Council (NJC). The NJC had earlier rejected what it described as a flawed nomination and ordered the state government to appoint the most senior judge within seven days.

Weeks later, the judiciary remains without a constitutionally recognized head, raising concerns about governance, justice delivery, and the rule of law in Imo State.
