The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it will investigate the viral footage showing one of its members who appeared to be punished for an undisclosed offence.
The video showed the corps member allegedly forced to kneel by a school proprietress. Although details remain unclear, it has sparked outrage on social media.
In the clip, the corps member was questioned by the proprietress about failing to report for work, claiming she had menstrual pains. The proprietress dismissed her excuse.
The footage has angered many who alleged persistent bullying of corps members by employers. When contacted, NYSC’s spokesperson Eddy Megwa said they are still investigating to ascertain where and when it happened.
Megwa stated: “We have to know the circumstances that led to it. They could be playing, they could be serious, I don’t know.”
The scheme says it is auditing to establish facts before it can comment substantively. But it has vowed to probe the matter thoroughly.
The viral video has spotlighted the alleged maltreatment of youth corps members in some workplaces. By launching an investigation, the NYSC hopes to get to the root of this incident and ensure proper sanctions if any wrongdoing is confirmed
