The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has urged residents of Edo State, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone communities, to relocate to safer locations as predictions warn of intensified flooding in the coming months.
This advisory was issued on Thursday by the Edo State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr Gbenga Agun, through a statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, Efosa Ogbebor, in Benin City.
The warning follows recent forecasts from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, which indicate that heavy rainfall and flooding are likely to persist through September and possibly extend into October.
“We are appealing to residents in vulnerable areas to act now by relocating to safer grounds. Early action is critical to prevent loss of lives and property,” Agun stated.
He described the alert as a proactive measure aimed at reducing the potential impact of the seasonal disaster, stressing that increased rainfall observed in July has heightened the risk of flooding.
“The volume and frequency of rainfall this July have made it clear that urgent sensitisation is needed. Communities at risk must be adequately informed,” he added.
NSCDC has activated its Disaster Management Unit and directed divisional officers in high-risk regions, including Agenebode, Udaba, Anegbete, Ukpeko, Illushi, and Oji, to commence immediate public awareness campaigns.
Officers of the corps have been tasked with educating residents on flood preparedness, safe evacuation procedures, and measures to reduce losses during emergencies.
Commandant Agun called on community leaders, local government authorities, and traditional institutions to collaborate with the corps in spreading safety information and assisting in emergency readiness.
“We are committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure no community is caught off guard,” he said.
