In line with the directive of the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to rid the country of illegal mining activities in accordance with the Corps’ core mandate, the South South Mining Marshals have arrested four suspects for their involvement in illegal mining and the destruction of critical national assets belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Rivers State.
CSC Afolabi Babawale, National Public Relations Officer, NSCDC National Headquarters, Abuja, in a statement, said the arrest followed a petition by the NNPC on ongoing substandard mining activities posing serious threats to one of its facilities.
Responding swiftly, the Mining Marshals moved into action and discovered extensive environmental degradation and damage to parts of the land, which already posed hazards to nearby communities and risks to lives and property.
According to the statement, preliminary findings revealed that although the company behind the activities possessed a quarry licence, “its operations fell far below standard operating procedures.”
“This negligence contributed to land degradation, safety hazards, and increased risks to vital national infrastructure and personnel in the area,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and profiling at the NSCDC State Command in Rivers, while the illegal site had been sealed to prevent further damage.
The NSCDC, under the visionary leadership of the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s natural resources and critical infrastructure.
It said the Corps would continue to intensify efforts to end illegal mining nationwide, ensuring that all perpetrators, regardless of status, were brought to justice
