The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Dr. Ahmed Audi, has directed the immediate withdrawal of a petition allegedly submitted to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions by the Commander of the Mining Marshal, Assistant Commandant of Corps Attah Onoja.

This was contained in a statement signed by the corps spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, on Sunday.

The petition reportedly raised allegations of assault and obstruction by police officers against NSCDC personnel engaged in anti-illegal mining operations in Nasarawa State.

However, the NSCDC management has stated that the officer acted unilaterally and without prior authorisation, according to the statement.

In a formal communication, the Corps clarified that it dissociates itself from the petition and emphasised the need for amicable resolution of the matter in line with the longstanding cooperative relationship between the NSCDC and the Nigeria Police Force.

The statement noted that Audi reaffirmed that the Inspector General of Police has consistently supported the NSCDC’s operations and has encouraged inter-agency collaboration in the interest of national security and the advancement of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The Commander of the Mining Marshal acted outside his purview by filing the petition without the authorisation of the Management.

“The Corps Management therefore dissociates itself from the petition while the officer has been directed to immediately withdraw the said petition to allow for a smooth and amicable resolution of issues raised in the spirit of the robust interagency relationship between the Nigeria Police and the Corps as well as the harmonious working relationship between the IGP and the CG.

“The CG has requested for a joint investigation with the police with a view to unravelling what actually transpired as we work towards finding a common ground,” the statement added.

He expressed regret over the situation and extended an apology to the IGP for any embarrassment the petition may have caused.

NSCDC management also noted that appropriate internal measures are being considered in response to the officer’s actions.

The CG reiterated his commitment to continued collaboration with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to combat criminal activities and improve the safety and security of all Nigerians.

“I have spoken to the IGP on the matter and sincerely apologise for the embarrassment that the petition might have caused.

“I have also directed that the petition be withdrawn immediately with a view to resolving it administratively without any rancor”, Audi was quoted saying in the statement.
