NIMC to sanction agents charging for NIN registration

The National Identity Management Commission has issued a stern warning to its Front End Partners, declaring that licenses will be revoked for those found extorting applicants during the National Identification Number enrollment process.

Reiterating its commitment to free and fair access, the Commission emphasized that NIN registration remains entirely free of charge and condemned any demands for payment as unauthorized and illegal.

In a statement released on Friday, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, outlined the agency’s zero-tolerance policy on extortion.

“The Commission does not charge nor authorize any staff or its Front End Partners to charge applicants for the NIN enrolment,” the statement affirmed.

To curb fraudulent practices, NIMC has directed security agencies to track and apprehend any staff or partners engaged in such activities.

“Anyone caught will be sanctioned appropriately in line with the provisions of the law, and the license of such FEP will be withdrawn,” the statement further warned.

The Commission called on the public to report any extortion attempts through its official channels, including email at customercare@nimc.gov.ng or by phone at 0700-225-5646.

While assuring Nigerians of its dedication to seamless and accessible NIN enrollment, NIMC highlighted its efforts to eliminate extortion.

“We remain committed to providing seamless enrollment services while ensuring that applicants are not exploited,” the statement added.

In related developments, the Commission reported a significant milestone in NIN registrations, with the total number of Nigerians with NIN increasing to 110 million—a 2.39 per cent rise from the 107.34 million recorded at the end of May 2024.

The statement noted that NIMC’s proactive measures and increased public engagement reflect its drive to uphold transparency and integrity in its operations, ensuring that every Nigerian can access identity services without financial hurdles.
