A graduate of Youngstown State University in Ohio, Cynderila Patrick, has filed a lawsuit against the United States President, Donald Trump, after her student visa was revoked.
Patrick sued Trump on Wednesday through her attorney, Rhys Cartwright-Jones, stating that the revocation of her student visa threatened her educational investment.
The 36-year-old had her visa revoked on April 8, making her a victim of the international student visas revocation launched by the US government as part of the crackdown on immigration.
Trump had been using minor offences, including traffic violations, to cancel foreign student visas at California campuses.
Patrick, a resident of Maryland, said she needed the student visa to obtain a work permit in the US after she obtained a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 2024.
A report on Cleveland.com revealed that the lawsuit sought a “temporary, preliminary and permanent order” for her visa to be reinstated.
It also argued that her due process rights were violated and that the US government failed to notify her on why her visa was revoked.
“This disruption will severely hinder her ability to gain professional experience in the United States, undermine the educational investment she has made, and place her at a competitive disadvantage in her field,” Cartwright-Jones wrote in the lawsuit.
The case was assigned to US District Judge Sara Lioi in Akron.
According to the report, no fewer than 61 visas for Ohio students, including 14 at YSU, and more than 1,000 students across the US have been revoked under Trump.
Patrick enrolled at YSU in 2022 and received a $1,000 scholarship from Intel for students who aimed to work in the technology field in 2023.
She was a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers, according to the university.
