The Federal Government has approved a $1 billion port modernisation project for Lagos, marking a significant step in its bid to transform Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and improve efficiency across seaports.

Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made the announcement during the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, CILT, Nigeria Conference, held in Lagos under the theme “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for a Sustainable Blue Economy in Nigeria.”

Represented by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, Oyetola said the Lagos Port Modernisation Project forms part of a broader agenda to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector for global competitiveness through upgraded infrastructure, improved cargo handling, and the adoption of smart technology.

“We are working closely with all stakeholders to achieve a paperless, technology-driven port environment that enhances efficiency, reduces turnaround time, and curbs corruption,” he stated.

According to the Minister, the $1 billion Lagos port upgrade will serve as a model for similar projects nationwide, as the government has already begun the procurement process for port modernisation outside Lagos to ensure even development across all maritime corridors.

Oyetola emphasised that these reforms reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening logistics performance, boosting competitiveness, and positioning Nigeria as a leading maritime trade and investment hub in West Africa.

He also highlighted the impact of the Deep Blue Project, which has helped the country maintain a record of zero piracy incidents over the last three years, significantly improving maritime security and investor confidence.

“Since the establishment of the Ministry, we have focused on reform and institutional strengthening. Through initiatives like the Deep Blue Project, we are safeguarding our maritime domain, encouraging investment, and reducing the cost of doing business,” Oyetola added.
